The
Anonymous Person No one cares about you. For all you know, when you die, the only attendees will be the gravedigger on the clock, and a priest who can’t wait to get back to his altar boys to mentor them into the life of pedophilia. We hope for a strong turnout when we die, and the number of mourners will be construed as a referendum of how much our lives meant to the ones left behind. If no one attends your funeral, you will never know so what difference does it really make? It’s like being asleep for the government approved eight hours, and the world is spinning out of control around you. You’re oblivious, you see. Cause you’re asleep and you don’t give a shit because what you don’t know has no affect on you. It’s akin to being dead, but still suspended in sleep life. The little man, better known to the census bureau as Mr. / Miss Anonymous is now a midget being ridden around the track of life by everyone above him. He might as well be a porn star spreading his dreams open for the world to see how inconsequential he feels in his everyday life. You lead an ordinary life, employed at a job that offers no excitement, but it pays the bills and keeps your kids fed and in decent clothes. They wonder out loud why they can’t have the latest clothes, shoes, go on fancy vacations, and have all the latest gadgets like all the kids on MTV and BET. You wonder to yourself why in the hell did you have all these kids, and they don’t know how lucky they are to be here? If only some things were free, they would have been only a fleeting thought for a day. But the time for that has passed-this is your life. The Wheel of Fortune has turned and the arrow points to shit out of luck. An old couple has hit the $100 million dollar lottery again and will give half to the Church of the Poor Bastards. The rest of the loot will be left to all the cats of the world who don’t have to pay bills, don’t mind being homeless and can basically eat mice to survive for the rest of their feline nine lives. God help us he screams at the television, but even God it seems is away on a well deserved vacation. Even God, the eternal optimist, must say sometimes-enough of this shit already. Can’t these humans get it together? The anonymous person turns on his television only to see every no talented person in America is now a celebrity on television, and he wonders when will his time come or did Andy Warhol forget about his fifteen minutes of fame. How ironic or to more aptly describe it-inane it is that all the stupid shit you’ve done all your life has just been one long audition for a part on reality television. Stupidity it seems does pay after all. How can it be “reality television” when cameras are following you around, and literally dictating how you will act and what you will say to a rabid audience of millions. This is just bad fiction television stealing away from the audience of other quality shows. It’s like a shower singer suddenly becoming the toast of the music world, and the real musicians are going “what the fuck”. Ya. That’s what it has come to down in this mass culture of crapola. We’re sucking down feces everyday and believing we’re enjoying the best of what life has to offer. People like him are easily forgotten, just another face in the crowd. The only people from his crowd to ever go on to some sort of infamy are serial killers, pedophiles, and a reality show winners who milk their fifteen minutes until it expires. He ponders late into the night wondering what talent God has blessed him with because surely God wouldn’t send him into this world ill-equipped without the superpowers of a talent- no matter how utterly ridiculous that talent might be. At least, it’s something he could excel at to prostitute his God loaned talent to better his circumstances and then look down upon the less fortunate. It’s a vicious cycle. Everyone can’t be born beautiful. If that happened then even someone who is just a smidgen less beautiful would be looked upon as being ugly. Some group of people has to be in that group of the less fortunate this is why we have telethons so the rest of us can feel better about ourselves. At least we’re trying to help the less fortunate is the last thought on your mind before sleep takes you away, and you feel like a good Samaritan for doing your part. Good for you. Your anonymous gift will help an anonymous person in a God forsaken country you’ve never heard of in your life. One more act of anonymous random kindness, and you’re guaranteed a 1st class seat into God’s heaven. All around the world is the dawning of a new day, and the masses that live their entire lives in anonymity go about doing the grunge work of the world. Everyone matters, even when it seems that no one cares what we do in our everyday work life serves a purpose. And at their best on a given day, the people who are better for you do would thank you for all your hard work. A life lived in the shadows without the constant adulation and praise of the public might not seem like a lot to most, but at the end of the day each man’s happiness is measured by the quality of a life lived, and that one person you might have touched along the way. Even in the shadows, one can shine brightly and make a difference. Jéan-Pierre,
