When Michael Jackson Mattered
When Michael Jackson mattered He took me to a place of suspension of disbelief Billie Jean would vibe with me through the day Everyday I’d Wanna Be Starting Something With a Pretty Young Thing And have her be The Lady in My Life Ah, Mike was the man Before all this nonsense of playing with young boys His talent was a thing of beauty to watch Before the onslaught of hip hop on MTV When black music was deemed irrelevant Michael danced his way to becoming the first MTV could no longer deny what the masses already knew Genius was among us and he could touch the sky Human Nature being what it is, Michael soon believed the hype Further and further he strayed Until he no longer knew if he was black or white I long for the days when Michael Jackson mattered Everything he did was an event And the whole world stopped to watch in suspense Just to see what Michael could do next I guess after awhile it’s difficult to top yourself How often can you drink in the well of genius And come back with another Thriller A once in a lifetime blend of music and talent History, I hope will be kind and recognize The genius that was Michael Jackson But it’s a sad fact that his talent is but an afterthought And he’s now merely a laughing stock To the masses who once revered him I still believe that Michael lives And cream eventually rises to the top. Dean Jéan-Pierre (Anyone who knows me knows that I have a deep affection, call it love for Michael Jackson. In my youth, the genius of his musical talent captured my imagination, and it saddens me today that when conversation about him comes up the whole freak show thing is the first topic of conversation and not his talent, but it is his own doing. Still, I wait for the talent to rise and take hold again. Everything that is retro has new life, why not Michael?)
