Compassion...
If I touched you
with my hands
In a show of human compassion
would you understand where I'm coming from
or would you recoil from a feeling so unfamiliar
a feeling you don't remember ever having felt
so foreign to you as the word I love you
If I stood before you overcome with grief
In need of a show of compassion
a basic human emotion
would you extend yourself and share in my grief
or stand there like a ghost pretending not to see
there are times when it's difficult for some of us
to open our hearts and just be human
and it's not because we don't want to
how can you show another person love and affection
If you weren't taught to be that way
how can you show your sisters & brothers compassion
when you've never seen it in action
how can you give love unselfishly
when the notion of love to you
has always been more about taking than giving
until you learn to give of yourself
the impact of true love will never be felt.
