Momma

In so many ways,
I'm still so much my mother's child
Even today with years of experience of being an adult
Raising a child of my own
All of that is forgotten when momma comes around
She dispenses wisdom as effortlessly  as she gives her love
her smile still so radiant after so many years of sadness
as we sit at the table seemingly equals for the first time
but in my eyes I'll forever be the child
and for the first time she lets down her guard and we talk adult to adult
she recounts the struggles of raising two young boys
she confides in me of the endless nights of worry and doubt
as we slept peacefully safe in the belief that matter what,
momma would take care of everything
all our lives, that's what she did-we never wanted for anything
In between sips of her tea, she gets that faraway look that she often does
whenever she's deep in thought...
even as a young child I learned not to intrude
even mommy's need a little private time to themselves
as many times as I've watched her, I've often wondered where she goes
In that moment of freedom she lets go of the sadness, breathes in pure joy
slowly she would come back to reality as if awakening from some beautiful dream
the look of peace, contentment ,she journeyed back with has stayed with me all these years
to this day I've never asked her where she goes to attain that peace
In between sips of  tea she's always said to me
life isn't always what it seems and U don't always get what U want
but, if somehow through the heartache and pain that life can sometimes bring
U find a place to go to maintain your peace of mind
release yourself from everything that hurts, let the presence of god shine his light
as I sit here sipping a cup of tea, I imagine that momma is still here with me...
